It is 2022 and climate change is as real as it can get. The perils of global warming and climate change are detrimental to the human population capable of wiping out all of mankind if things continue down the same road.
As interior designers, we find ourselves in a position where we can bring effective change in the way we design environmentally conscious homes to ensure as little harm to the environment as possible. Sustainable methods of design are no longer just trendy, they are of the utmost importance in the current environmental climate.
1.Materials
When it comes to picking environmentally conscious materials for your homes, designers need to understand wastage and its production process. The material can be classified as green or ecological based on its biodegradability, chemical content, renewability, and longevity. Similarly, you can also pick materials that utilize less energy in the production process like wood, bamboo, and stone. Concrete, plastic, and steel consume a lot of energy and can be avoided if you’re looking to go the sustainable route.
Incorporating sustainable furniture into the design of homes is also greatly encouraged. Recycled, repurposed materials-, or natural wood, cork, rattan, and bamboo furniture can be used to add to the aesthetics of the home.
2. Energy Consumption
Homes consume a lot of electricity and produce tons of greenhouse gases. Products like AC, Refrigerator play a huge role in contributing to the
Greenhouse gases. The appliances and lighting also consume a lot of energy.
What designers can do in cases where they’re looking to reduce the energy consumed is to make strategic use of natural light in the homes as well as paint the homes with the right colors that will only make the room look bright and lively.
3.Water Conservation
Integrating methods to conserve precious water is highly recommended while designing homes. A water-efficient design with built-in water recycling systems and tools can be key to the water-efficient design. A water-use feed system is designed to encourage consciousness about the need for conserving water. Apart from that, no leak taps, rainwater harvesting methods and pressure regulating devices can be incorporated into the design.
