HOW TO STYLE SMALL PLACES TO MAKE THEM LOOK BIGGER

A small space comes with a lot of challenges, which is only a problem if one is unable to appreciate the charm of these small spaces. Dealing with the challenges of using small spaces to make them feel welcoming takes a lot of conscious effort. Principles of scale, light and movement make the art of styling small spaces look warm and welcoming very simple.

1.Declutter

It’s easy to want to style your home with umpteen number of attractive decor accessories you love. Having too many items only makes the space feel crammed, suffocating and anything but welcoming. It is important to scale down and declutter your space to give the items in your space some room to breathe.

2.Colours

Dark colours make the room feel warm and cozy but the use of lighter hues gives the space a bright and airy look to it. A contrast of bright whites and deep dark colours create contrast, which creates depth and the illusion of a larger space. Make sure to pick colours from the same family.

3.Say no to heavy fabrics

It’s best to pick out fabrics that are light-weighted, like linen for curtains. Ditch heavy rugs and even if you use rugs and carpets, keep them simple and minimal. Area rugs do help foster the illusion of a larger square footage.

4.Furniture

Using the right furniture is key to making a space look big. Tall and bulky furniture can block the view into the room and make the right space look crammed. Sofas and chairs with open and exposed arms and legs allow light to filter under it making the space look airy.

5.Mirrors

With the right placement, mirrors can make a space look bigger. Using wall mirrors, long mirrors stacked against the wall, glass table tops or mirrored chest of drawers bounces the light coming in from the windows and reflects everything to add brightness and light to your rooms. Mirrors can be angled to reflect both natural and artificial light for a brighter space during the day. A mirror near a window to reflect the world outside is especially effective.

6.Multi-functional furniture

Use furniture that has multiple uses like a sofa bed, a chest that can also be used as a coffee table, foldable and nesting tables etc. These articles of furniture can be put away when not in use saving precious space and making the room look spacious and airy.

7.Decor

While outfitting small places, avoid the small knick-knacks that are sure to clutter your space. Also avoid heavy pieces of decor that eat up too much space. Keep everything in the space minimal and simple. It is important to leave a little bit of space between your furniture to create a sense of roominess.

Aim to use large decorative accents than many small decorative items.

When styling small spaces everything matters, colour schemes, furniture, decor, fabrics and much more. The key is to keep it simple and minimalistic.
