Feng Shui

Feng Shui is a traditional Chinese practice of using energy forces to harmonize and help individuals find peace with their surrounding environment. The words Feng and Shui literally mean wind-water. It was believed that landscapes and water bodies directed the flow of cosmic energy through spaces and structures. If the flows of cosmic current or energy are channelized the right way, it has the potential to improve wealth, happiness, longevity, and relationships. Some negative effects of the wrong flow of cosmic current could lead to undesirable results.

Feng Shui was used to orient spiritual buildings and dwellings. A highly westernized adaptation of this traditional practice is its reduction to Interior Design for health and wealth. It is important to separate the two, so as to not hurt the sentiments of either groups of people.

Interestingly enough, Feng Shui has been identified as non-scientific and pseudo-scientific by philosophers and scientists. It is also penned down as a paradigmatic example of pseudoscience. This is because Feng Shui makes claims that are cannot be tested using the already existing scientific methods.

Feng Shui has been redefined and reinvented and commercialized to cater to the needs of certain groups of people. The traditional theory has somewhere been lost in translation or worse, scorned.

1. The Five elements of Feng Shui

Feng Shui splits the world into 5 elements. Balancing the flow of all these 5 elements will help channel good cosmic energy into your homes. Their corresponding traits can thrive in your life if the 5 elements are balanced in your surrounding.

  1. Wood
  2. Fire
  3. Earth
  4. Metal
  5. Water

A Bagua map is a carefully devised tool that lays out various life areas or stations. The life areas as per the Bagua map include health, wealth, marriage, and fame. These areas correlate with various parts of a building or living space.

You can integrate Bagua Map into your Interior design plans by laying out the Bagua map with your floor plans to help you determine the colors, artwork, decor, and much more.

2. Yin and Yang

The concept of Yin and Yang is also an integral part of Feng shui. Balancing both the yin and yang can ensure that everything in your living space feels right. The space only feels best when it has got Yin and Yang.

Yin is the feminine energy associated with the night, quietude, and coolness whereas Yang is the masculine energy associated with the sun, heat, and sociability.

You can change how your space feels by modifying these energies or their source.

Integrating traditional Feng Shui into today’s modern-day homes might be an uphill battle. But the elements of traditional Feng Shui were what gave it a pseudoscience title. It is important that we incorporate the traditional instead of a commercialized version of Feng Shui into our homes.
