Sofas are an integral part of any living space. The sofa you pick is going to define what kind of vibe and aesthetics your space emanates. Research and careful consideration can go a long way in setting a vibe and defining your space to stand out.
1.The scale of the Sofa
It is important to choose the right dimensions for the sofa as it is key to how you pick out the sofa for your living room. The sofa is one of the main articles in the living space and it needs to make a statement. The size of the sofa becomes crucial if you want your living space to stand out. A large sofa will take over the space disproportionately and a smaller sofa will not serve its purpose. A proportionately sized sofa will allow enough circulation around it and will not dwarf, or overshadow other design details.
The two-thirds rule states that one should pick a sofa that is about two-thirds of the wall length. If you are planning to commission the sofa, it’s best to stick to the two-thirds rule but if you’re buying one, keep in mind that you can go above the two-thirds rule only if you intend to seat more people on the sofa.
2.Shape
The shape of the sofa is also key to determining how it defines the space. If the ceiling of the room is low then go for a sofa with a lower back. This keeps the sofa design in proportion to the room’s height. It often happens so that these lower back sofas create a sense of illusion that there is extra space. Curved sofa lines can be used to soften the feel of the room if there are too many angular
elements in the space.
Sofa arms shouldn’t be too bulky as they could obstruct the flow of the room.
3. Colors
One cannot stress enough the importance of colors in how a space is perceived. Consider the color palette, its scheme, and how well it might go with the space.
Dark-colored sofas may bring a cozy feel to the room. They are great for homes with children or pets as such spaces are prone to getting spills or dirt on the sofa. The dark color of the sofa can help mask this.
To enhance the way your sofa looks, you could add light-colored throws and cushions to complement the dark-colored sofa. In general, light-colored sofas go well with neutral colors on walls like white, cream, nude, etc. This allows the space to look breezy and open.
4. Flooring and walls.
For dark-colored sofas, it is best to pick light-colored floorboards, cream carpets, and light-colored area rugs for your sofas to sit comfortably on. A dark-colored flooring will really bring out the color of the light-colored sofa. Neutral-colored walls go well with dark-colored sofas. Dark-colored sofas and dark-colored walls can make the space look dark and gloomy especially if there is not enough light flowing through. That being said, the dark wall and sofa combination might work in a well-lit space.
The key is to keep it simple and do tons of research before picking out a sofa for the living room. There is very little room for error as Sofas are key to defining your living space where you will spend time entertaining your near and dear ones.
